چکیده

mark of facial attractiveness.1,2 Skeletal asymmetries generally require surgical intervention to improve facial esthetics and correct any associated malocclusions. The classic approach in volves a presurgical phase of orthodontics, during which dental compensations are eliminated, and a postsurgical phase to refine the occlusion. The presurgical phase can be lengthy, involving tooth decompensations that often exaggerate the existing dentofacial deformities.3 Skeletal anchorage now makes it possible to eliminate the presurgical orthodontic phase and to correct minor surgical inaccuracies and relapse tendencies after surgery. In addition to a significant reduction in treatment time, this approach offers immediate gratification in the correction of facial deformities,2 which can translate into better patient compliance with elastic wear and appointments. Another reported advantage is the elimination of soft-tissue imbalances that might interfere with ortho dontic tooth movements. This article describes a “surgery first” approach in a patient with complex dentofacial asymmetry and Class III malocclusion.

Three-dimensional surgical simulation for facial asymmetry: soft tissue-, skeleton-, and occlusion-based planning

Using three-dimensional (3D) computerized simulation systems has enabled us to determine the anticipated position of the maxilla and mandibular proximal and distal segments. The bony segments need to be mobilized according to the planned final position. The concept of 3D surgical planning in orthognathic surgery has evolved continuously. While using 3D simulation for planning the correction of ...

Abstract: Can a Surgery-First Orthognathic Approach Reduce the Total Treatment Time?

Although pre-surgical orthodontic treatment has been accepted as a necessary process for stable orthognathic correction in the traditional orthognathic approach, recent advances in the application of miniscrews and in the pre-surgical simulation of orthodontic management using dental models have shown that it is possible to perform a surgery-first orthognathic approach without pre-surgical orth...

Prepubertal trauma and mandibular asymmetry in orthognathic surgery and orthodontic patients.

The association between radiographic evidence of mandibular asymmetry and history of prepubertal trauma was analyzed in orthognathic surgery patients and orthodontic patients. There were statistically significant associations between radiographic evidence of mandibular asymmetry and a history of prepubertal trauma in both patient groups. The results suggest that prepubertal trauma could be one ...

Contemporary Correction of Dentofacial Anomalies: A Clinical Assessment

Contemporary computer-assisted technologies can support the surgical team in the treatment of patients affected by dentofacial deformities. Based on own experiences of 350 patients that received orthognathic surgery by the same team from 2007 to 2015, this clinical review is intended to give an overview of the results and risks related to the surgical correction of dentofacial anomalies. Differ...

Frequency of dentofacial asymmetries: a cross-sectional study on orthodontic patients.

BACKGROUND Correction of orthodontic asymmetries is crucial to achieve functional occlusion, aesthetics and stability of post orthodontic treatment results. To date valid frequency data of dentofacial asymmetries in Pakistani orthodontic patients do not exist to document orthodontic treatment need. The objectives of this study were to determine frequency of dento-facial asymmetries, severity of...
